"Brazil revel in Ronaldo’s on-field humiliation
It was not a good week for the man who is likely to collect all the World Player of the Year awards over the next month or so. Cristiano Ronaldo walked down the tunnel at Villa Park at the weekend trading abuse with the crowd after a lacklustre performance. But that was a pleasant evening compared with what he had gone through three days earlier.
On Wednesday, Brazil thrashed Portugal 6-2 in Brasilia and the home side seemed to take unnatural pleasure in humiliating him. One incident, which is already a classic on YouTube, stands out.
Thiago Silva, a central defender no less, juggled the ball over Ronaldo’s head (a classic “sombrero”) when the Manchester United forward tried to press him after an ill-advised throw-in towards the Brazil goal. Ronaldo was incensed and, later in the match, he launched a terrifying tackle at his opponent.
“Ronaldo is just a malicious guy, if I hadn’t jumped out of the way, he would have broken my left leg,” Thiago Silva said. “He lost control because we totally snuffed him out of the game.” Ronaldo did say sorry for the tackle after the game, but Thiago Silva was having none of it. “I’m not going to accept an apology from a guy like that,” he said. “He needs to grow up.”
Supporters in Brazil are loving all this. Normal service has resumed: once again, it is the men in green and gold who are humiliating their European opponents with their otherworldly skills and flair. That Ronaldo, a player who has been accused of showboating in an attempt to humiliate his fellow professionals, is the victim only makes it all the more delightful in their eyes."
